Um...Can You Guess What That Is?

What is that?

Who doesn’t love a good game of “guess what that picture is?” Oh, just us? 🤓

Okay, after passing that photo around after our Monday morning meeting, our team agreed—we were a bit stumped.

So, What the heck is that?

It’s from a BBC special on YouTube showcasing the Midnight Zone located deep within our ocean. The deep-sea toadfish (the strange creature in the photo) lives there too.

That sandy residue is pieces of raining dead fish parts, debris, and other organic matter that has fallen from the surface and is more than half a mile thick (one kilometer)!

At OMNI we’re obsessed with space exploration, but we also love the natural world. Deep space and deep-sea exploration have a few similarities:

  • To explore both, we must overcome insane pressure and cold temperatures

  • There’s a lot that’s still unknown about both

  • We need special equipment and technology

Ever wonder how someone travels to the deepest parts of our ocean?

They use a deep-sea rover.

Last year in 2020, Kathryn Sullivan and Vanessa O'Brien became the first women to touch the bottom of Challenger Depth at 10,925m (6.7 miles)! That’s about 16,000 PSI which is almost like 1,100 office buildings sitting on top of your head.

Go ahead and watch the BBC special on YouTube to learn more fun facts about the deepest parts of our ocean and stay fascinated by our beautiful world!
